In the book Building Southwark: Architecture and Regeneration in a London Borough, renowned author and architecture critic Kenneth Powell continues the story of one of Britain's most dynamic and successful regeneration areas. This architectural renaissance, which began in the 1980s, is primarily evident along the south bank of the Thames but extends throughout the area, from Walworth to Peckham and from Bermondsey to Dulwich.
The impact of this regeneration can be observed in the creation of cultural venues, the revival of industrial spaces for residential and commercial use as well as co-working, and the production of a wealth of impressive new and already iconic works. This comprehensive and illustrated book describes more than 50 projects that have been built in Southwark in the new millennium. The projects are organized by type of construction and include well-known landmarks such as the expansion of Tate Modern, the Shard, and the renovated London Bridge railway station, as well as a variety of social, cultural, health, and educational projects.
After the introduction, which provides an overview of the architectural strategy in the area, the entries are categorized into Cultural/Recreation, Residential, Infrastructure/Work, Mixed Use, Education, and Planning projects. It also includes planned projects under construction, such as the massive Elephant & Castle center, Walworth Town Hall, and the masterplan for the Canada Water basin. Illustrated with photographs and drawings, the book offers an inspiring overview and an invaluable record of the ongoing revitalization of this historic and progressive borough.
