In 1924, the English biographer and author Iris Origo (1902–1988) and her husband, Antonio, purchased La Foce, an expansive estate that includes a semi-ruined 15th-century villa, with a dream as ambitious as it was bold. Driven by a deep desire to make a difference, the Origos devoted their lives to transforming a poor land into a thriving landscape of wheat fields, olive groves, and vineyards. Together with English architect Cecil Pinsent, they redesigned the house and created an elegant tiered garden, featuring bramble hedges, rose gardens, fountains, and a pergola covered in wisteria. The dramatic story of La Foce—from the taming of the wild valley and personal losses to the hardships of war—is narrated by the Origos’ granddaughter, Katia Lisi, with memories from Benedetta Origo, the couple's eldest daughter. Iris Origo's letters and diaries are beautifully woven into a personal narrative of the property's creation and the people behind it. New photographs by Simon Upton and Matteo Carassale, a fold-out durable view of the property, as well as a newly discovered collection of unpublished images of the garden's creation in the 1920s bring to life the rich history of this marvelous estate.
