Description

The home is where you live and what you live with. At Fallingwater, this truth is illustrated in an extraordinary way, like never before. Designed and built by Frank Lloyd Wright, over the waterfalls of Bear Run in western Pennsylvania, as a summer residence for entrepreneur and philanthropist Edgar Kaufmann Sr. and his wife, Liliane Kaufmann, Fallingwater is considered a symbol of architectural daring, innovation, and drama. However, for the Kaufmanns, the home represented a sanctuary where the family sought to live in harmony with the natural world and its immediate surroundings, including the rooms of the house. Far from being something precious, the Kaufmanns wanted their home to be comfortable, while still maintaining a sense of relaxed elegance. This atmosphere is evident, largely due to the collection that the Kaufmanns have created, which includes unique objects, paintings, textiles, sculptures, and much more, acquired through trade, travel, professional relationships, and personal friendships. The collection contains items from countries around the world, both rustic and high art, spanning through the centuries, with works such as the sculpture 'Mother and Child' by Jacques Lipchitz, glass objects by Rene Lalique, furniture by Mies van der Rohe, Tiffany lamps and vases, and 'Portrait of a Man' by Diego Rivera, as well as woodblock prints from Japanese masters, such as 'Night Snow at Kanbara' by Hiroshige, to name just a few highlights. However, Fallingwater, beyond its content, its impressive form, or the place where it is located, is much more than the sum of its parts – here in splendid exhibition is a complete and underlying work of art.
