The classic work of Leopoldina Fortunati originates from the significant social upheavals of the 1970s, which challenged sexual and racial discrimination in labor on a global scale. Her work expands and transforms the analysis of the sphere of reproduction, redefining the value of human life and the work performed at home. The Arcana of Reproduction is being released for the first time in its undivided form, accompanied by historical notes and contemporary commentary. This fundamental text is an essential contribution to contemporary discussions around social reproduction and the history of Italian feminism. Fortunati's work provides the first theoretical approaches to 'immaterial,' 'emotional,' and 'care' labor, as well as the role of technology in reproduction, many decades before they gained widespread acceptance in English academic literature. Reading this work 50 years after its initial publication gives us the tools to analyze the current state of capitalist development and women's lives today. The text remains prophetic and necessary in the age of digital labor.
