A historical novel about the deep and heartbreaking journey of a woman towards emancipation, in 19th century Greece. Katerina, in the final days of her life, embarks on a mental journey back in time, from Ioannina in 1809 to Sydney in 1907.
The fiction is based on the true story of Katerina Plessou, known as Rousso, the daughter of the mistress of Ali Pasha's firstborn son, who was engaged to Ioannis Kolettis, the future Prime Minister of Greece. A journey from Ioannina to Tepeleni, to Serres, to the free Messolonghi just before the great siege, and then to Kalamos, the British-controlled island in the Ionian Sea, where Rousso would meet the governor James Cramer, whom she would follow to the other side of the world, distant Australia, thus being recorded in history as the first Greek female settler.
Through the pages of the book, we wander through the Ioannina of Ali Pasha and Kyra-Vasili, with its markets and guilds, meet heroes of the Greek Revolution such as Odysseas Androutsos, are transported to the Serres of Nikolaos Kasomoulis at the outbreak of the Greek Revolution, witness the siege of Messolonghi, and encounter Mavrocordatos, Lord Byron, Botzaris, and other personalities of Greek History.
By following Katerina's life, we experience the most shocking historical events of Greece in the twenty-one, as the protagonist, by some dictates of fate, is present in the fire of the uprising, alongside people who marked the history of the country.
