Thirty essays, written exclusively in honor of Professor Michalis Spourdalaki by scholars who either as students or collaborators encountered him, explore the relationship between politics and political science.
The interdisciplinarity that characterizes the scientific interests of the honoree (Party, Democracy, Left) provides the opportunity for the authors to examine the connection of politics with almost all social sciences. This is reflected in various ways across the five sections of the volume.
In the introductory part, referencing critical theory as well as theorists of the dominant stream, significant issues of the current period are examined, such as "emerging dystopian metacapitalism," the "dimension of political and economic liberalism," the challenges posed by phenomena of cynicism and sexism, and public education as a means of "shaping the democratic citizen."
In the second part, the essays focus on the relationships between political parties, society, and democracy. In the third part, the emphasis of the texts shifts to the role of "political representation of the Left in social transformation." The fourth part analyzes dimensions of social representation and social classes, and finally, in the fifth part, through in-depth analysis of state policies, critical dimensions of the state today are presented.
