Description

Description

The Roman epic retelling of the quest for the Golden Fleece. Valerius Flaccus, a Latin poet who thrived around 70-90 A.D., composed in smooth and sometimes vague language an incomplete epic poem Argonautica in eight books, about the quest for the Golden Fleece.

The poem is characteristic of its time, as it constitutes a free reworking of the story that had already been narrated by Apollonius of Rhodes, in which Valerius excels in arrangement, liveliness, and character description. Valerius's poem shows a great imitation of the language and thought of Virgil, as well as extensive knowledge.

The main interest of the epic poetry lies in the relationship between Medea and Jason, particularly in the development of Medea's love, where Valerius showcases his finest moments. The long series of adventures and various Roman references suggest that the poet intended to honor Vespasian (to whom the epic poetry is dedicated) with special mention of the emperor's ships in waters around Britain.
