Finley Donovan rolls the dice
Finlay Donovan, along with her nanny and partner in crime, Vero, plans a girls-only trip to Atlantic City. In reality, they are going to meet a dangerous loan shark, save Vero's childhood love, Javi, and locate a stolen car.
A few hours after their arrival at the hotel, it becomes clear that the rescue mission will end in failure. Javi's kidnapper, Marco, refuses to negotiate, demanding immediate payment of the debt in exchange for Javi's life, while insisting on knowing the whereabouts of his missing nephew, Ike. Unable to confess what really happened to Ike, Finlay and Vero are forced to devise a new plan. But when they sneak into the loan shark's suite, Marco is already dead.
They have no idea who killed him. The situation becomes even more complicated, as Finlay has to deal with a jealous ex-husband, two small children, her mother's marital problems, and a decomposing loan shark. Will she succumb to the pressure and reveal what she has done, or will she be forced to risk everything?

"Vero hadn't lifted her gaze from the note in her hand even once since we left her cousin's workshop. She had given me the keys to one of Ramon's service cars and had sunk into the passenger seat, reading and rereading the single sentence on the paper, as if it were a riddle that would magically solve itself if she looked at it long enough. I turned onto the long dirt road, comparing the number on the rusty mailbox with the address printed on the custody agreement that my ex-husband's lawyer had sent me before the holidays. As I passed the last bend, I sighed with relief when Steven's F-150 came into view.
I parked the car nearby and turned off the engine, leaning a little in the seat to get a better look at the two-story farmhouse. I needed a few minutes to collect myself. It was eight-thirty on a Friday morning in late January, but it felt like a whole year had passed since the last time I saw my kids, just yesterday.
'We need to think about exactly what we're going to say to him before we go in,' I said, brushing my hair out of my face, which was in the smoke. 'Make sure we're on the same page so he doesn't suspect anything.' I saw my reflection in the mirror. Two raccoon eyes looked back at me, and I wiped them with my smoke-blackened fingers."
