After the blood-soaked December of '44 in Athens and Cairo, British officer and journalist Wilfred Byford-Jones finds himself in May '45 in war-ravaged Berlin, integrated into the staff of Field Marshal Montgomery via London.
He will find Berlin and Germany on the brink of collapse, facing a sweeping humanitarian crisis: death, hunger, epidemics, displacement, the black market, prostitution, and the fall of the German mark into the abyss. And in the background loomed the Cold War. The spirit of suspicion and rivalry hung over the relations between the Western Allies and the Soviets.
Shocked by the sight he will encounter, the tireless Byford-Jones will wander through the neighborhoods of Berlin and speak with ordinary people. He will participate in the Allied committee to investigate the fate of Hitler and other top Nazi officials. He will attend the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals. He will witness firsthand the difficulties faced by the Allies in their efforts to rebuild Germany as well as the first steps that led to its division into East and West.
W. Byford-Jones will document with penetrating insight the suffering of the Germans and will try to understand the reasons that led an entire people to engage in a terrible war envisioned by a mad leadership, thus bringing destruction to Europe and ultimately to the people themselves.
“The Twilight of Berlin,” the apt title chosen by the author referencing Wagner's drama and German mythology, constitutes a striking document – a warning about the horrors of war and Nazism.
Exactly 80 years after the end of World War II, the publishing house Historical Quest presents the translated work to the Greek public, accompanied by a rich photographic material from the author himself.
