Description & Specifications

Dostoevsky writes Notes from Underground in the winter of 1863-64, at a time when he is suffering from epilepsy seizures and debts due to gambling.

The novel is divided into two parts. In the first, the thoughts of the protagonist, a former civil servant living in isolation in Petersburg, are expressed, in a room that is sad and miserable. He continuously criticizes his contemporaries and the society of his time, while presenting himself as a villain, yet at the same time admits that he does this merely to boast.

In the second part, the protagonist recounts some events from his life, where failure on both personal and professional levels is evident. The climax of the narratives comes with his encounter with the twenty-year-old prostitute Lisa, whom he psychologically crushes while she relies on him for her salvation.

Notes from Underground was the first work of Dostoevsky that Friedrich Nietzsche read, who, captivated, noted: “Dostoevsky is the only psychologist from whom I have something to learn…”.

A deep and subversive psychological drama, filled with philosophical concerns and existential questions, that explores the dark aspects of human nature and the individual's conflict with society.
