The 20th century is the most exciting century in the recent history of Thessaloniki. During this period, historical changes and significant transformations of the city took place, and important events occurred that set it apart from the 23 centuries of its history.
The aim of the book is to present briefly the multifaceted journey and presence of Thessaloniki in the 20th century (historical, residential, demographic, social, cultural), from a different perspective. It hopes to approach the century by focusing on the tangible remnants and surviving documents of the period: the emblematic buildings, the notable historical sites, the museum collections, as well as its lost landmarks, which illuminate faces, actions, movements, and eras.
For this reason, the motto “I visit the history of my city” is the main focus of the Guide, placing more importance on touring, visiting, and becoming acquainted with historical sites, monuments, and museums. These “visits,” along with the rich photographic material, compose the panorama of the remarkable 20th century of our beloved city.
