The braided, non-absorbable silk suture can generally be used for suturing, holding in contact, and/or closing soft tissues. However, its use is not indicated for the tissues of the central cardiovascular and central nervous systems.
The application of the non-absorbable surgical suture S initially causes a slight inflammatory reaction of the tissues, characteristic of the reaction to a foreign body, followed by the gradual formation of a connective tissue capsule around the suture.
Silk sutures are not absorbed, but the proteins gradually degrade with a progressive loss of their tensile strength.
