This book concerning Greek antiquity does not require justification for its purpose and subject with respect to the Greek public. No one among us denies that in antiquity lies the nobility for which we rightly boast above all nations, and therein we find the source of our own possession from which all nations have drawn the culture and the wealth of knowledge that they subsequently cultivated and multiplied.

If among all the study of antiquity is considered an intellectual benefit, for us Greeks it is also a patriotic duty.

And many significant works have been written in all European languages, including our own, concerning various aspects of Greek antiquity; however, because of this multitude and their variety, they are not accessible to all. It was deemed useful to compile a handy guide, through which, without specialized and lengthy studies, anyone can easily find what they seek.

This alphabetically arranged dictionary contains within its defined scope all that is of interest from our classical antiquity, pertaining to geography and political history, the arts and letters, and the political and domestic life, extending even to the borders of other ancient nations insofar as they relate to Greece.
