Set in a provincial railway station in Italy in 1945, the story of the play "The Suitcase of Crossed Destinies" unfolds, a work aimed at children. Alessandro Izzi, through the story of a child in exile, approaches – with the sensitivity appropriate for the age of young viewers – the experiences of the victims of Nazism and Fascism, using a device reminiscent of fairy tales: the innocent, fragile porter Angelo, although illiterate, possesses the unique gift of understanding "suitcase language," the language spoken by the suitcases that carry the testimonies of the displaced to concentration camps.
A notable feature of the work is the rather extensive stage directions, which do not merely serve a practical purpose but – as they describe the behavior and attitude of the characters – are distinguished by their "literary" quality; for this reason, "The Suitcase of Crossed Destinies" has been characterized by critics as "a theatrical work that can also be considered a delightful narrative."
