Greece is a leading power in the field of shipping. While maritime law, as a specialized branch of commercial law, occupies Greek theorists extensively, the same was not true for maritime criminal law, resulting in a theoretical gap regarding the criminal aspect of maritime law, despite the existence of rich relevant case law.
This gap is addressed by the book of Emmanouil D. Metaxakis titled "Maritime Criminal Law," which is divided into eight chapters as follows:
The first chapter concerns basic concepts, namely the concepts of the ship, the port, the navy, shipping documents, ship exploitation, and shipping companies.
The second chapter deals with jurisdiction issues.
The third chapter is an interpretation of the provisions related to maritime criminal law of the Penal Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
The fourth chapter contains an interpretation of the criminally relevant provisions of the Public Maritime Law Code.
The fifth chapter analyzes the provisions concerning disciplinary offenses of this latter Code.
The sixth chapter addresses special criminal laws.
The seventh chapter covers criminally relevant issues related to the work of classification societies and the Ship Inspection Branch.
Finally, the eighth and last chapter deals with criminal liabilities arising from shipbuilding and ship repair activities.
The book "Maritime Criminal Law," containing original interpretation of the relevant provisions and utilizing a rich body – largely unpublished – of case law, is addressed not only to legal professionals but to the entire maritime community.
