The book "Stories. Fairy Tales" gathers the literary gems with which Ion Creanga impressed his contemporaries when he read them enthusiastically at Junimea, starting in 1875, and which he published in "Conversations of Literature." These texts were partly pieces of tradition originating from the rural environment of Humulesti, and partly a result of his imagination and literary talent. They also constitute a monument of style, an example of skillfully supporting folk content in a high-quality literary form.
For readers, both the stories and the fairy tales are texts with which they grew up, enchanted from a very young age, learning that fools, the wicked, the lazy, and the greedy are always punished, while the wise, the clever, the brave, and the just always triumph.
Ion Creanga (1837/1839–1889), a Romanian writer, is one of the classics of Romanian literature. The son of farmers, he spent his early school years in Humulesti, his birthplace, and later in Brosteni. His mother wanted him to become a priest and sent him to Falticeni, to the catechetical school ("the factory of priests"), and then to the theological seminary in Iasi, where he graduated from the lower department in 1859. He was a teacher and deacon in Iasi for twelve years. In 1872, he was expelled from the clergy due to behaviors unfit for a priest's status. Creanga was also a teacher and contributed to the writing of four school books, the most famous of which is a method of writing and reading from 1868, or "Creanga's Alphabet." Creanga was introduced by Eminescu to the circle of the Junimea society, whose magazine, "Conversations of Literature," published his stories and fairy tales.
Creanga is here a storyteller of fairy tales, there an actor of compositions that fit the old definition of a novella. G. Calinescu, a writer and literary critic, verifies that Creanga's language "is the soul of the storyteller, to the extent that he takes his place as a speaker among the listeners, and at the same time, the soul of his heroes."
