The Prince and the Pauper is, of course, an imaginary story about a rich boy, Edward, of royal lineage, from 16th century England, who meets Tom Canty, a ragged beggar. The two boys, of the same age and looking like two drops of water, exchange clothes and… identities.
Tom ends up at the palace, where he pretends to be a prince and experiences the wealth and indulgence afforded to an heir to the throne. Edward finds himself on the streets of London, dealing with filthy beggars and soulless thieves, where he gets to know his subjects better. From here, the story becomes a true thriller!
An extraordinarily amusing read, The Prince and the Pauper is filled with humor and irony. It delights children with an adventurous tale, while reminding adults not to forget that appearances can be deceiving.
Mark Twain (1835–1910) was an American writer, essayist, and humorist. Born in Missouri, Samuel Langhorne Clemens left school at the age of 12, having to earn a living after his father's death. He led an adventurous life and traveled all over the United States, working as a typesetter, gold seeker, steamboat pilot on the Mississippi, and war correspondent during the American Civil War, when he adopted the literary pseudonym under which he became famous as a writer: Mark Twain. Important novels include: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876), The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889).
"Twain was touched by genius enough to construct his own morality in his books, using humor and intelligence and, in the case of The Prince and the Pauper, a wonderful plot." - E.L. Doctorow, American writer, master of historical fiction.
