The 85 mm focal length is ideal for portraiture, slightly compressing the background so that your subject stands out in the frame. The lens's optical design includes 2 HD high refractive index elements and two ED extra-low dispersion elements that help reduce chromatic aberrations at the edges of images. The 85mm f/1.8 offers fast, accurate autofocus and a programmable function button (Fn).

The lens's maximum aperture of f/1.8 allows for detailed control over the depth of field and additionally facilitates work in low-light conditions. It features high-speed autofocus as well as manual focus, with a minimum working distance of 80 cm. Focusing is performed with an STM stepping motor for silent operation, a feature essential for video shooting and work in very quiet environments. The autofocus system supports precise and agile eye recognition and tracking.

The lens's maximum aperture of f/1.8 allows for detailed control over the depth of field and additionally facilitates work in low-light conditions. The aperture is controlled electrically and manually with a ring on the lens body, which has 1/3 stop increments. The aperture has 11 blades for rendering very soft out-of-focus areas (bokeh).

It features a USB Type-C port for firmware updates, while the mount construction from entirely aviation-grade aluminum increases its durability over time and offers a solid feel when mounting it on the camera.

    My first AF for the LUMIX S5D. I have vintage prime lenses from 1975, including the FD 55mm f1.2. I never had an 85mm prime. I read and watched all the available reviews and paid a little less than €300 -blackfriday- to get it. From the first clicks I realized it has a "character" reminiscent of vintage glass.

    Positives:
    - Excellent build quality, metal everywhere, elegant, beautiful.
    - Sharp from f/1.8, improves at f/2.8 and reaches "perfection" at f/5.6.
    - Excellent bokeh due to the 11 blades in the iris.
    - Quite good AF, but not for sports and such.
    - Ideal for night shots.

    Negatives:
    - It is not waterproof.
    - The lens hood is cheap and does not fit securely.
    - There are no "clicks" on the aperture ring.

    5 stars because I enjoyed and loved it from the first clicks. 45 years as a photographer and I rarely enjoyed a lens so much. Its bokeh has a swirl reminiscent of expensive lenses and the result even at f/1.8 is impressive.
    Of course, I recommend it.
