Dr. Jim Parson, while driving, is inadvertently transported from 2012 to 2405. There, he discovers a different society where his profession as a physician conflicts with the central principles of future humanity. The population is strictly controlled through mandatory sterilization, and only a death can trigger the formation of a new embryo, while the weak are euthanized and disease is unknown.
Parson's arrival in this future humanity offers interesting theories for a society where death is treated in a completely different way than we know today. Philip Dick, through his hero, highlights the enormous consequences of control being taken over by technocrats and the creation of an American paradise free from poverty and disease in this science fiction novel.
Jumping through time and space from the sixteenth century to the twenty-fourth and back, providing us insights into how people survive, whom he divides into tribes - Native American Indians and whites, with the latter not existing in the distant future - and warning us about our correct or incorrect evolution.
