Description

At the turn of the century, a man struggles to change the devastating course of American foreign policy to save innocent lives from annihilation.

How many lives can one person save alone? No matter how many he saves, it is never enough. George Horton realized this in a tragic way. As he watched the dock of Smyrna fade away from the deck of his ship, he saw the helpless, terrified crowd that was trapped between the sea and the fiery onslaught. The people he had saved thanks to him and who were now with him on the ship could not comfort him. Neither could the hundreds of Christians, Jews, and Muslims he had rescued during his tenure at the American consulate in Smyrna provide any solace for him. In retrospect, he would confess that those persecutions made him ashamed to "belong to the human race."

However, no matter how much Horton felt he could do more, the reality of his work was incredibly difficult and became even more challenging because his superiors hindered humanitarian aid from reaching its destination and covered up all kinds of atrocities with fake news and misinformation. What mattered to them was to win the favor of the Turks in order to gain access to the rich oil resources. And when Horton denounced their hypocrisy, they conspired against him to tarnish his reputation.

Unfazed, Horton continued his fight and even reached out to the President and Congress demanding a resolution against the shameful treaty (Treaty of Lausanne). The stakes were the outcome of World War I, the stability and freedom of the Middle East, and the potential for new genocides.
