Description

It is a warming, stimulating herb that improves digestion, is beneficial for the liver and circulatory system, and has expectorant and estrogenic actions. It is quite effective against spasms of the internal muscles (of the stomach and intestines).

It helps in expelling intestinal gas (flatulence) and increases the secretion of fluids from all endocrine glands, including the secretion from the mammary glands. The essential oil of anise is eliminated from the body gradually and contributes to clearing phlegm from the respiratory passages through breathing.

For these properties, anise is used for stomach and intestinal irregularities, increases the expulsion of intestinal gas and their peristalsis, is used against coughs and irritation of the upper respiratory tract, hoarseness of voice, as a diaphoretic and antipyretic agent. It is particularly effective in children for bronchial problems and asthma.

The root of the plant is used to prepare a tincture that is utilized in folk medicine against sore throat, pharyngitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis. The fresh root is antidiarrheal. The homeopathic tincture of the root is recommended for headaches and nosebleeds.

Usage: It is prepared as an infusion. Before use, lightly crush the seeds to release the volatile oils. Pour a cup of boiling water over 1-2 teaspoons of seeds and let it steep covered for 10-15 minutes. Drink a cup three times a day. For bloating, sip the drink slowly before meals.

Precautions: Anise may cause an allergic reaction. The use of anise oil is not recommended for individuals with dermatitis. Excessive consumption of anise may lead to neurological effects.
