Summary:

Maria, a deaf-mute girl, lives with her father on an isolated island. The new teacher in the village takes an interest in her and tries to teach her sign language. However, the wealthy man of the village rapes her, and when she has a child, he attempts to take it from her, as he and his wife are childless. In a violent scene, Maria kills him, and a lengthy trial follows, where she is acquitted, with the teacher by her side.
