Black cumin or Nigella sativa is small black seeds from an annual plant of the Ranunculaceae family, originating from Southern Europe and Northern Africa.
It is used to make tea by adding a teaspoon of seeds to hot water and letting it steep for 10 minutes, covering the cup to prevent the aroma from escaping. The seeds can also be added to cooked dishes, whole grain bread, or used in the preparation of wine or vinegar. The seeds can be ground and mixed with honey or sprinkled on salads.
They are an ideal addition to salad dressings and can be mixed into fried dishes, especially when combined with lemon and tahini. Black cumin can be an excellent tonic when mixed with honey and garlic for people with asthma or cough, as well as for those who want to boost their immune system during flu and cold season or at the onset of an infection.
According to medical studies, black cumin is known for its anticancer, antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, antihypertensive, and nephroprotective properties, ranking it among the top foods in modern human nutrition. Black cumin contains chemicals with strong antioxidant activity, the most important of which is thymoquinone.
