Tonewood Selection & Slope-Shoulder Acoustic Design

The Martin DSS-17 stands apart from standard dreadnoughts with its Slope Shoulder design and rounded upper bouts. This geometry, combined with its full 25.4" (645 mm) scale length, produces robust acoustic volume while smoothing sharp frequency peaks for a more balanced mix. The solid Sitka spruce top provides excellent structural stiffness relative to its mass, ensuring ample dynamic headroom and clear note separation during dynamic strumming. The solid mahogany back and sides enhance the midrange response, delivering a warm, organic tone, a direct attack, and tight, controlled lows.

Scalloped X-Bracing Architecture & Dovetail Joint

Inside the instrument, a Scalloped X-Bracing 5/16" (7.94 mm) system made of Sitka spruce is used. Hand scalloping removes material from areas under less tension, allowing the top to vibrate with greater amplitude around the bridge. This design increases tonal responsiveness and enhances the instrument’s acoustic projection. The neck is securely joined to the body at the 14th fret using a Simple Dovetail Neck Joint, ensuring solid wood-to-wood contact and unimpeded sound wave transmission throughout the instrument.

High-Performance Ergonomics & Rosewood Components

The neck is made from select hardwood and features the ergonomic Modified Low Oval profile with a High-Performance Taper, maintaining a consistent, comfortable width from 1-3/4" (44.5 mm) at the nut to 2-1/8" (54 mm) at the 12th fret for smooth playability across the entire fretboard. The fingerboard and Modern Belly-style bridge are made from high-density Rosewood, offering a smooth feel and resistance to wear. The natural bone nut and compensated saddle ensure optimal energy transfer from the strings and accurate intonation.

Whiskey Sunset Aesthetic & Vintage Hardware

The guitar’s visual identity is defined by its satin Whiskey Sunset finish, which brings out the natural grain of the spruce and lets the wood resonate freely without the damping caused by thick lacquer coatings. The outline of the top and back is accented with Antique White binding, while the fingerboard is adorned with subtle 1955 Style 18 Dots mother-of-pearl inlays. Tuning is supported by Golden Age Relic Nickel open-gear tuners with cream buttons, combining 1930s period styling with smooth operation and tuning stability.
