Wood Selection & Auditorium Acoustic Geometry

The Martin 000-17E Black Smoke is based on the proportions of the Auditorium (000-14 Fret) body, combined with the shorter 24.9" (632 mm) scale length. This geometry reduces string tension, providing a softer feel when performing bends and intricate fingerstyle techniques. The solid Sitka spruce top offers high stiffness and efficient energy transfer, ensuring a wide dynamic range and clear articulation. The solid mahogany back and sides enhance the midrange, providing an organic tone, a responsive feel, and controlled bass while preventing unwanted resonances during recording.

Scalloped X-Bracing Architecture & Dovetail Joint Construction

Inside the instrument, a Scalloped X-Bracing 5/16" (7.94 mm) system made from Sitka spruce is used. The hand-scalloped braces remove unnecessary mass from the soundboard, allowing it to vibrate freely around the bridge area. This maximizes acoustic sensitivity and produces rich harmonic content, even with a light touch. The neck joins the body at the 14th fret with a Simple Dovetail Neck Joint, ensuring a tight wood-to-wood fit and seamless transfer of mechanical vibrations throughout the soundbox.

Fishman Matrix VT Enhance NT1 Electronic System

Electro-acoustic amplification is provided by the Fishman Matrix VT Enhance NT1 system, which combines an Acoustic Matrix piezo pickup beneath the saddle with an additional body sensor (Enhance Transducer) mounted on the underside of the bridge. This configuration captures both the direct vibrations of the strings and the body’s percussive dynamics. The discreet rotary controls for volume (Volume), tone (Tone) and body sensor blend (Enhance Blend) are positioned on the inner edge of the soundhole, preserving the instrument’s exterior aesthetics.

High-Performance Neck Ergonomics & Vintage Aesthetics

The neck features the ergonomic Modified Low Oval profile with a High-Performance Taper, maintaining a consistent thickness from 1-3/4" (44.5 mm) at the nut to 2-1/8" (54 mm) at the 12th fret for smooth playability across the entire fingerboard. The Modern Straightline fingerboard and bridge are made from solid Rosewood, offering resistance to mechanical wear. The vintage aesthetic is completed by the Black Smoke satin finish, Antique White body binding, Style 18 Mother-of-Pearl inlays, and open-gear Golden Age Relic Nickel tuners with cream buttons.
