Basic Features
Tonewood Selection & Acoustic Geometry Style 35
The Martin D-35 Johnny Cash is based on the geometric design of the classic Style 35 series, which introduced the historic three-piece back made of solid East Indian rosewood. This distinctive construction, combined with sides made from the same material, delivers a rich bass response, a dense harmonic spectrum, and natural acoustic depth. The top is made of solid Engelmann spruce, a wood that is lighter and more flexible than Sitka spruce, offering high sensitivity and a smooth response even when played with a lighter fingerstyle touch or pick.
Bracing Architecture & Gloss Black Finish
Inside the instrument, a Non-Scalloped X-Bracing 1/4" (6.35 mm) system made from Sitka spruce is applied. It is thinner than the standard 5/16" braces on the D-28. This design allows the top to vibrate with a greater range of motion, enhancing the bass and producing a warm, balanced acoustic tone. On the outside, the body and neck are fully coated with thin layers of Gloss Black Nitrocellulose lacquer. This finish allows the wood to breathe and mature acoustically over time, faithfully recreating the look of Johnny Cash’s original custom instrument.
Ergonomic Neck, Ebony Components & Custom Inlays
The neck features the modern Modified Low Oval profile with a High-Performance Taper, maintaining a consistent, comfortable thickness from the 1-3/4" (44.5 mm) width at the nut to 2-1/8" (54 mm) at the 12th fret for smooth playability across the entire fingerboard. The fingerboard and Belly-style bridge are made from solid Black Ebony for maximum wear resistance. The fingerboard is decorated with Abalone shell star inlays and the understated "CASH" lettering on the upper frets, while the natural bone nut and compensated saddle ensure optimal energy transfer from the strings to the soundboard.
