Description

The publication serves as the scientific catalog accompanying and documenting the temporary exhibition of the Ministry of Culture ― of the Ephorate of Paleontology, Speleology, and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki ― titled "In the Cave: stories from darkness to light." It is an original exhibition concept that, through a thorough interdisciplinary approach, aims to highlight the timeless and multifaceted relationship between humans and caves ― a relationship that has remained unbroken from the Paleolithic era to the present day.

The choice of this particular theme reflects the enduring and multi-layered significance of caves in human life and culture. From the earliest stages of human development, caves have served not only as shelters from the elements and predators but also as the first centers of socialization, creativity, knowledge exchange, and cultural development.

Even after they ceased to be primary living spaces, caves maintained their primal connection to religious and transcendental elements, archetypal meanings, and symbols, making them timeless landmarks of myths and collective historical memory, as well as sources of inspiration for reflection and art. Additionally, modern scientific interest in understanding the history and the interaction between humans and the natural environment has complemented ― without replacing ― these traditional associations.

The individual sections present a total of 296 objects from 30 caves in northern Greece, as well as from museums and collections of high scientific and cultural significance, many of which are previously unknown to the general public. Each artifact forms a piece of the puzzle narrating the history of caves and the interaction between humans and nature within them. Simultaneously, the exhibition highlights the methodological and technical aspects, the fascinating nature, and the various challenges of speleological archaeological and anthropological research.
