One family, two genders
Our Orthodox Church experiences marriage as a "great mystery," the roots of which can easily be traced in the scriptural texts and the teachings of the Fathers. And it is a mystery because it sanctifies gender and removes the mark of the Fall.
Within marriage, therefore, the love of God for man is expressed. God wants to give existence and eternity, life without death, participation in His divinity to other rational beings as well. For this reason, He creates the rational world and man.
When spouses live the love of God for man and live for this love, then they use their gender to restore their fallen state. The desire to have children, and indeed as many as possible, is participation in God's creative desire.
