Adult Artemia brine shrimp are an excellent live food source for fish, crayfish, shrimp, crabs, and snails. They come from large inland waters with highly alkaline saline water.
The Artemia are specially cultivated as live food in saltwater facilities and contain chitin, an important dietary fiber for fish that supports their gut health. They also provide vital building materials for crustaceans.
Additionally, Artemia contains cholesterol and molt hormones, beneficial for the molting of crustaceans. Their ratio of fat, carbohydrates, and proteins is optimal for fish and freshwater invertebrates.
Because they originate from saltwater, they do not introduce parasites or bothersome organisms into freshwater aquariums. Artemia shrimp do not have a higher salt content than other freshwater live foods, so they can be fed without hesitation after a quick rinse.
Artemia themselves can only survive for a short time in freshwater, making them suitable for shrimp and snails that do not actively hunt live food.
