  • This version of the Insta360 Mic Air (the version with one transmitter and one receiver) is the most complete for someone who wants to do solo vlogs. It is the company’s first microphone and is a compact wireless microphone designed for use with cameras and phones, especially for those who work with Insta360 systems. In the package, in addition to the instructions etc., there is a case with special cutouts for one transmitter, one receiver, and a magnetic base. In addition, on the other side there is an internal mesh pocket where you put the rest of the contents: the charging cable, magnetic clip, dead cat with elastic fit, mic cord for the neck with magnetic base. The weight of the transmitter is about 7.9 g, as is the receiver respectively, which makes it extremely light and practical for everyday use without weighing down the setup. The operating range reaches up to 300 meters in ideal conditions, while the transmitter’s battery life reaches 10 hours of continuous use, with an integrated noise reduction system that cleans up the sound without requiring any adjustment from the user. We have used it up to 80 meters in a straight line, without issues. It has also been used for 1.5 hours straight in one episode. It records audio at 48 kHz and has 2 levels of noise cancellation, while also allowing you to mute during recording. The button for turning it on/off and using it is one. It has an LED with 3 colors (blue and a lighter blue for setup, green, red) for the functions.

Its use is simple: you turn on the Insta360 camera and then the mic. You make the initial connection depending on the way each one wants it and from then on, every time the camera is active and the mic is turned on, it connects automatically. For other cameras that accept and support the receiver, you plug it into the device, turn it on, turn on the mic and by pairing the two parts they connect automatically with each other, you place the transmitter on the person speaking and you are ready. As a setup it is ideal for use on a phone mounted on a gimbal as well. The device is immediately recognized as an external microphone and starts recording without any additional process. The system is almost plug-and-play and does not require difficult settings, however upon receiving it, go in immediately and do a firmware update through the Insta360 app on both the TX and the RX. Compatibility is fully tested with the Insta360 cameras Ace Pro 2, X5, X4, X6, Luna Ultra and GO Ultra, but it also works with Android phones via USB-C with the RX, with computers and with cameras that accept USB-C audio input in the same way with the RX. If in the future you need a second microphone as well, you can buy the standalone one, but while on a phone for example the use will be exclusively through the RX, on the Ace Pro 2 and X5 you will also need to connect the RX and you will have the ability to have either both mics on or dual recording, one mic through the RX and the other recording directly on the camera. It is also allowed to use the device, at least the basic functions turn on/off, start/stop record, take photo, through the mic, which is very convenient with the X5 as it allows me to have it in another place outside the car and start recording from inside the cabin or stop it.

The official price on the Insta360 site for the Mic Air (1 TX + 1 RX) is around €85.99 and recently twice it was on sale at the price of the single mic alone (with the single one dropping even lower).

It is a light, easy-to-use and reliable microphone with a long range and good battery life, although its price is a little high compared to the simplicity of the system. In comparison with the competition, it is in the category of DJI Mic 2 (Single TX kit) and Hollyland Lark M2 (Single TX). Of the 3, the DJI is clearly superior, with the Lark M2 performing at the same level as the Insta360 Mic Air.
If you are between these, to help you I would say the following:
If you have Insta360 devices, then the price as well as the compatibility (e.g. using the camera through the mic) is clearly a reason to choose the Mic Air over the DJI. On the other hand, the Lark M2 is a little better and seeing sometimes prices above €90 for the Mic Air in Greek stores, if you have many different cameras, then it is worth buying the Hollyland Lark M2 Kit, which comes with a pouch that has a carrying-charging case for 2 Lark M2 mics, 2 adapters for iOS/Android and a third one that fits and charges inside the case for GoPro, DSLR, mirrorless etc., charging/connection cables and dual mounting accessories and a shirt etc. You just have to buy, at an extra cost, the special ports with mic adapters that Insta360 has for each of its cameras, and this is where buying them is only worth it from the company’s site because they are consistently at lower prices.

  • It is good and very practical that it connects via Bluetooth and is also a camera remote control. Be careful with interfering objects because they can easily interrupt the connection and sometimes may even ruin the video. It is rare, but it happens; it gives an error and stops the video for no reason, even when within range.

For its size, it is a good microphone and connects very well with Insta cameras. I give it 4 stars because its sound in some cases is not so good and if you want to use two microphones you definitely have to connect the receiver, which, however, does not fit into the Insta 360 without completely removing the door. It is not as plug n play as I would like for that case.

Also, keep in mind, something I experienced and learned, if the microphone moves out of the camera's range it will ALSO stop the video recording, it doesn't just stop sending audio but it also stops the video.

Overall, I am satisfied with the purchase but depending on the occasion I might go for a solution with better sound

  • The sound quality can be heard in the Video I attached.
It is very small in size, I was very worried that the size would affect the result it would have but in the end it sounds VERY good and I did not expect it.
I tried it on Insta360 X4, Smartphone, and PC.

It should be noted that it can also be connected to any device that supports USB audio.
