Description

The Grammar of Ancient Greek of the Classical Period is the first comprehensive reference grammar of the ancient Greek language in the last century. It reflects the significant progress made in the field of linguistics over the past decades, offering teachers, students, and researchers of Greek a complete and practical approach.

The chapters concerning phonology and morphology fully utilize the findings of comparative and historical linguistics to clarify the complex systems of roots, stems, and endings. The section dedicated to syntax includes modern linguistic analyses of issues such as the use of cases, tense-aspect, voice, subordinate clauses, infinitives, and participles.

In an original section on textual cohesion, particles and the order of syntactic elements are examined, while selected passages are analyzed and new methods for approaching ancient Greek texts are suggested. Throughout the volume, numerous original examples are provided, accompanied by modern Greek translations and, where deemed necessary, explanatory notes. User-friendly tables, internal references, and detailed indexes make it easier for the reader to locate topics and terms.

This Greek edition follows the formatting of the original English edition to ensure that the presentation is as effective and direct for the user as possible. Efforts have also been made to combine traditional and modern terminology, both out of respect for a long grammatical tradition concerning the language and because of the dialogue with the findings of contemporary linguistic science. Where necessary, brief explanatory notes added by the scientific editor have been included, and recent scholarly studies, dictionaries, and other reference works have been incorporated into the bibliography.
