The occupation brought enormous suffering to the Greek people and caused incalculable destruction, leading to the death of thousands of human souls and a complete collapse of the Greek economy.
During the same period, the Greek resistance developed, which was the most active in the occupied states of Europe. However, from late 1943, they began to clash with one another.
When Greece was liberated in October 1944, there was an atmosphere of extreme political polarization, which soon led to the outbreak of civil war. The civil strife provided an opportunity for many collaborators of the Nazis not only to escape punishment but ultimately to become the ruling class of post-war Greece, after the defeat of the communists.
The author's personal experiences and memories uniquely describe those dark years and transport us vividly, through his gripping narratives, to life back then...
