Description

"In the Bowels of Serifos," published by "City Compass." A research work by journalist Alexandra Christakaki, featuring testimonies from the last surviving miners of Serifos who were child laborers in 1963, when the life cycle of the island’s mines came to an end, which had begun in ancient times. These are stories that reflect the conditions of a labor medieval era and exploitation even during the last decade of their operation (1953-1963), the overexploitation and destruction of the island's resources by the respective German and Greek contractors, which is still visible today as visitors encounter holes in the mountains, debris, abandoned galleries, rusted machinery, and collapsing loading ramps.

The book records testimonies from eight elderly men today, who during the decade of 1953-1963 were children, minor workers in the mines, on the surface, loading, timbering, and blasting. All have memories of accidents, tragedies, and dead workers they carried on their shoulders. They were children who sacrificed their education for daily wages from sunrise to sunset and walked endless hours to reach the mines or the port.

Today - mostly elderly men - they still bear disabilities from their childhood. They were robbed of their contributions, their ancestral land through coercion, and today some entrepreneurs appear as heirs of mining activities, claiming half the island.

There is the testimony of a 95-year-old woman, daughter and wife of a miner, whose husband became disabled from a work accident at 22, as well as testimonies from four children of miners, who belong to this generation burdened with the traumatic experiences of their parents and grandparents.

The book includes interventions by Professor Nikos Belavilas from the National Technical University of Athens, whose long-standing efforts contributed to the inclusion of "mining" Serifos in the World Heritage Sites that require protection, thus nullifying speculative real estate master plans, and the intervention of historian Vaggelis Karamanolakis, who comments on the functioning of the historic miners' union of Serifos, which established the eight-hour workday in Greece in 1916 with the blood of four workers, and that of the Cultural Association in Mega Livadi, which "preserves" the island's memory.

Finally, there are black-and-white photographs of the mining activities in Serifos, generously provided by the archive of the National Technical University of Athens.
