Graphics cards come factory-equipped with multiple thermal pads of different thicknesses, which makes their replacement during maintenance or the conversion of the heatsink to a GPU water cooler difficult. It ensures that all subsystems of the card, such as the memory and power circuits, are cooled evenly and effectively without the need to precisely measure the thickness of the pads.

For modifying a smaller graphics card without an active backplate (such as a GTX 1060), a 30-gram pack of TG Putty is usually more than enough.
