“With the shoes we were born with,” says Stavros, when, in the early part of the previous century, he played war barefoot with the other children. He will come to know real war during the Asia Minor campaign and will return from captivity “ragged and with nothing but bones.”
In the years that follow, he struggles to survive bearing the burden of his war wounds and the guilt of his child's death. His already grim mental landscape deteriorates further as his younger brother, Alexis, violently clashes with him in a coming-of-age journey through the harsh years of the Occupation and the Civil War. The final catharsis occurs with a physical injury to Stavros, adding to those of his soul.
In a land marked by History, where the past tragically and unchangingly converses with the present, faces have come and gone. In the story of the brothers, the reader will discern the adventures of Greece, which, willingly or unwillingly, barefoot, ragged, and eternally wounded, becomes embroiled in painful national adventures.
