"'I don't know,' said Raymond West. 'I'm not so sure. What do you think? We are a group of people with different experiences and different professions. Why don't we form a club?' 'Let's call it "The Tuesday Club",' said Joyce Lemprière, the painter, in her characteristically enthusiastic tone. 'We will meet every Tuesday and each member, in turn, will tell a story of an unsolved mystery that they know first-hand.'
'A mystery of which they know the solution, of course,' said his dear aunt Jane, Miss Marple. 'Because otherwise, my dear Raymond, it would be rather silly, wouldn't it?' 'Why, of course, Aunt Jane,' said Raymond, giving her a quick glance. 'That's what I meant. Each storyteller must know the solution to the mystery. The challenge will be to see if the others can find it.'
'Excellent idea,' said Sir Henry Clithering, who for many years was an inspector at Scotland Yard. 'I completely agree.' He looked around with interest – at the young painter, Joyce Lemprière, with her boyish hair and honest, boyish eyes, at Raymond West, the writer, a young man with refined taste but also a tendency to underestimate his fellow humans, and then at Dr. Pender, the elderly parish clergyman, a kind and educated man. Sir Henry was amused by the idea. 'I think we should set a time limit,' insisted Raymond. 'Say, for example, that the solution must be found within an hour. Otherwise, it will be the next person's turn to present their own problem, before the others have time to find the solution.'
