Description

In the midst of the crushing forces of the paranoid health system, despised healers and persecuted patients astonish with their mental greatness. The odyssey of a young doctor in the inhospitable archipelago of public hospitals.

Until the penultimate year of middle school, the idea that I would become a doctor had never crossed my mind. On the contrary, I was very much leaning towards the Polytechnic. I had even started attending a tutorial to take exams for mechanical engineering. However, at some point, I felt unbearable pressure from sine waves, integrals, and polynomial roots, and I decided to take exams for a school that did not require mathematics, thus choosing medicine. But the Polytechnic remained a suppressed desire for me, which is why, perhaps subconsciously, I later chose a specialty that required technical skills, dealing with plaster casts and other building materials, as well as using all kinds of tools, such as drills, pliers, hammers, trowels, spatulas, screwdrivers, saws, cables, chisels, rasps, vises, screws, and anything else considered necessary for carpentry and repairs, perhaps except for the double ladder and the toolbox with the wooden wedges.

Excerpt from the book

WRITTEN BY THE PRESS

Giorgos Dendrinós writes about the "Loufa" and variations of the National Health System.
Cháris Pontída

There is no doubt that Dendrinós essentially provides us, like every good and conscious comic writer, with a book of moral protest.
Vaggelis Chatzivasileiou, Eleftherotypia

The novel by Giorgos Dendrinós is remarkable, as it is hilarious while simultaneously taking on the task of depicting what we all know, sometimes pretending we don't see it, sometimes acting like it doesn't bother us, sometimes complaining, and at other times cursing: it tackles the depiction of hospital reality in the realm of public health.
Elisavet Kotsiá, I Kathimerini

Dendrinós has his tenderness, as he describes his life, but he also possesses a masterful, austere language that evokes laughter through its simplicity. It is one of those books that you read and your loved ones look at you strangely because you laugh loudly and uncontrollably. Tassos Telloglou

The eponymous film, directed by Sotiris Goritsas, was released in theaters in 2011.

Why should you read this book?

  • Explores intergenerational memory and violence with sensitivity and strength.
  • Its style is captivating – writing that speaks through silences, not just words.
  • It does not offer answers. It provokes reflection, discomfort, recognition.

Holding the briefcase with my appointment documents, I stood in front of the large entrance of All Saints. I clearly remembered that when I first visited this hospital as a student, above the four-leaf metal door with the glass panes, hung the "Reborn Phoenix," the huge bird of the Papadopoulos junta, which, assembled from large colorful plywood sheets and illuminated by neon lights, dominated the building. The emblem with the bird had now been removed, probably hastily and in a particularly violent manner, at least judging by its dismantling. However, no one had yet bothered to do the necessary repairs and whitewashing of the corresponding wall surface, resulting in the white imprint of the emblem of Greece of the Greek Christians being clearly visible on the facade of the hospital, blackened by moisture and exhaust fumes.

Entering the large reception hall, I met a cleaner who was polishing the broad leaves of the ornamental plants decorating the entrance area with a duster, and I asked her: – Do you know where the Theotokis orthopedic clinic is? – On the first central floor, she answered without raising her head. I paused for a moment. Then, recalling the image of the illuminated junta symbol, I was tempted to ask her: – Do you happen to know what became of that big bird that hung above the entrance? – They still keep it in the materials storage, in the basement. – And why do they keep it? – How should I know? Probably to hatch eggs, she replied cryptically, again without lifting her gaze from the broad-leafed monstera she was dusting.
