Description & Specifications

They say that every time God sees us whores, He cries. He cries out of shame, as there is no surplus with us. But if God cries, Death owes us!

1950s. On the wounds of a Greece that still bleeds from the war, in a neighborhood of Piraeus, the famous Troumba, amidst the smoke of rolled cigarettes and cheap drinks, love deposits its tattered dreams and the hope that life is magical and beautiful onto the bodies of women.

Day and night, the prostitutes loiter in the narrow alleys, selling their bodies for a pittance. A few steps away, their supposed protectors lie in wait like vultures to snatch their prey, selling them promises of a better tomorrow, made of fairy dust and angels.

Each of these women has a different story to tell, which may have started from the best homes or even from a marriage, an engagement, a great love. I was one of these women, known by the name madam Jenny, who went from being a simple prostitute to owning the most famous brothel in Troumba. No, life did not stand by me in hard times. There were no easy times.

One night entirely yours… This night I will recount to you. Now in my eighties, for many years, I am Evgenia Frankou, a respected woman who enjoys great esteem from her family and surroundings. No one ever learned who I really was. Why am I doing this now? Because to me, Death still owes...

Read an excerpt

HAVE YOU EVER seen children five, six, eight years old pulling each other's hair, lying on the ground over a handful of flour? A handful of flour… And yet, with this handful, a little water and salt, the mother would knead five or six miserable flatbreads and would trick the family's hunger. If, by chance, there was something left from our almost always empty table, then the joy would be doubled, because with this leftover she would fill the flatbreads, which would seem huge in our eyes, just as the hunger was in our stomachs! Those were hard years on the barren island where I was born. Shortly after the Asia Minor catastrophe, around 1924 or 1925 – my mother didn't remember exactly – I came into the world inside the hut of Thanasis and Maritsa, in the wild early morning, on my father's feast day, Saint Athanasios, on January 18th.
