Our country is at a crossroads. After many efforts, culminating in joining the Eurozone in 2000, Greece continues to be outside the core of the advanced countries of Europe. We remain last, far behind other southern European nations. We went through a severe crisis. Everyone understood what has happened. The crisis was neither inevitable to the extent that it occurred, nor should the effort to overcome it have been so painful.
Responsibilities were politically assigned. Now, we look ahead. The big bet is the reforms. These must aim at the promises of politicians for the future. We cannot move forward with outdated structures and mindsets.
How will we improve the public health system to ensure free quality care for everyone? How will we improve schools so that our children receive good free education without relying on private tutoring? How will we reform public universities so that young people obtain degrees of value within our country? How will we change the public sector to work efficiently and serve the citizen?
The answers will determine whether we can proceed correctly and achieve our goals. Greece is beginning to recover from the traumatic experience of the economic crisis while facing a new world, full of opportunities but also pitfalls. The timing is critical. I have tried to provide insights and thoughts that may be useful for a new path and a better future.
