The numbers indicate the diameter and are inversely proportional to it: No. 8 is thinner and No. 2 is thicker than all. Although the sizes of the letters differ from one manufacturer to another, there is a traditionally internationally accepted classification of drumsticks into the categories:

B (band): medium category
S (street): heavier and larger drumsticks
D (dance): Same as A but slightly larger.
