The SKC hand tap set includes three taps for cutting internal threads in metal surfaces. No. 1 has 8–10 chamfered threads for easy starting in unprepared materials; No. 2 has 3–5 chamfered threads for general use and for threads that do not extend to the bottom of the hole; No. 3 is used to cut threads all the way to the bottom of the hole.

A hole must first be drilled with a rotary drill. Tapping is done with a tap wrench or tap ratchet, and cutting oil helps the process run more smoothly.
