Expansion tanks are used to maintain the pressure of the central heating system within acceptable limits. Maintaining pressure is necessary:

• To replenish water losses in the system caused by bleeding at the radiators or minor leaks.
• To collect excess water created due to the expansion of water as the temperature rises.
• To prevent cavitation at the suction of the circulators.
