Thucydides is the first to have written a history that is philosophical, dialectical, consciously based on sources, with its own rules, strict objectivity, and unmatched literary value.
His work is a model of political thought and continuously provokes the keen interest of scholars and readers. The politician, historian, and thinker Thucydides is a unified personality, and his wisdom is considered indisputable.
Although historical circumstances may have changed and there are significant differences in beliefs and values, many aspects of the thought and world described by the historian are still familiar to us.
While it is an exaggeration to consider that any conflict in the modern world can be interpreted in the way Thucydides recounts the Peloponnesian War, history remains a living presence regarding issues of power and international relations and offers the reader much more than an abstract theory on the relationship of power to authority.
With his work, he does not teach us how to control events nor does he show ways to heal the wounds of a war or prevent tyranny, but he reminds us that people are easily swept away by uncontrollable desires, are ultimately controlled by them, and are destroyed.
We can even say that the real subject of the work is not the defeat and fall of Athens, but rather the tragedy of humanity, which proves incapable of understanding itself and the conditions of its time.
