The beginning of Chanel's iconic fashion line starts from the French seaside resorts. In 1912, Coco—then still Gabrielle—Chanel opened her first boutique in Deauville, followed by stores in Biarritz, Monaco, and Cannes. There, her simple and sporty designs met a cosmopolitan clientele who carried her fashion back to the capital, Paris.
In the 1920s, the Chanel brand experienced its first rise to prominence amid artistic and social upheavals, known as the "Crazy Twenties." This richly illustrated catalog documents, through sketches and photographs, the extraordinary productivity of the designer, who maintained friendships with artists such as Jean Cocteau and Pablo Picasso.
In the 1920s, Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes performed shows on the Riviera. The book reveals the Slavic influence on Chanel's creations, highlighting a network of relationships with female artists connected to Diaghilev's circle, such as Natalia Goncharova and Sonia Delaunay.
The book also includes La Pausa, Gabrielle Chanel's dream villa built in 1929 near Monaco.
