Description

Paracheirodon innesi (Neon tetra)

They belong to the family Characidae and live in the Amazon. They reach a length of 4 cm. The pH should be at a neutral level, 6 - 7.2, and water hardness up to 15 odGH.

Even today, they are among the most popular fish, especially among beginner hobbyists.

Features

  • Final Size: Up to 2 cm. (they reach 4 cm in adulthood)

  • Water Parameters: pH 6.0 – 7.2.

  • Hardness: Up to 15 °dGH.

  • Temperature: 21°C - 27°C.

  • Diet: Omnivorous (Flakes, pellets, frozen food)

  • Minimum Liters: 40-60 liters

  • Social Behavior: Peaceful, must live in schools (shoaling fish).

When they first arrived in Europe in 1930, they were considered a rare luxury species. Today, thanks to their successful breeding, they are accessible to everyone without losing any of their impressive appearance.

Skroutz Tips

  • Dark Substrate: Their colors literally "pop" if the gravel or sand in the aquarium is dark-colored. On a light-colored bottom, they tend to appear more faded.

  • Plants & Hiding Spots: They love aquariums with dense vegetation (planted aquariums). Plants provide them with security and a natural environment, reducing their stress.

  • Water Stability: Although they are beginner-friendly, Neons prefer "established" aquariums with stable parameters. Avoid placing them in an aquarium that has just been set up (the first day).

  • Lighting: They prefer low or diffused lighting. If you have strong lights, some surface plants will make them feel much more comfortable.

  • Compatibility: They coexist perfectly with other small peaceful fish such as Rasboras, Guppies, Corydoras (bottom catfish), and shrimp.

The Importance of the Thermostat

As a tropical fish, the Neon Tetra requires the use of a thermostat to maintain a stable temperature, especially during the winter months. The ideal temperature for their longevity is 24°C - 25°C.
