Hyphessobrycon amandae (Bleher 1987) was discovered by Heiko Bleher and named in honor of his mother Amanda. Its common name is ember tetra and it belongs to the large family of characins. This species has the typical tetra shape but grows to a maximum total length of about 2 cm. Most individuals display an impressive orange and reddish coloration with mild semi-transparency near the pelvic fin. The eye often reflects the color of the fish and has a black outline. Ember tetras will swim with other tetras, such as the neon tetra, but may become stressed by the presence of significantly larger fish. These fish swim at the middle level of the aquarium and do not feed from the bottom. It is recommended to keep them with other bottom-dwelling fish (such as pygmy corydoras), so that leftover food is subsequently consumed from the substrate and water quality is not degraded. The fish's natural diet consists of small invertebrates and plants. In the aquarium, it will accept all types of food such as dry (flakes, pellets), frozen but in small granules.
