Family: Poeciliidae

Origin: Venezuela, Trinidad, Barbados, Guyana (has spread worldwide due to breeding)

Size: 4–6 cm (females larger than males)

Lifespan: 2–3 years

Appearance characteristics:

  • More “full-bodied” compared to males
  • Tail usually smaller and less brightly colored
  • More swollen belly, especially when pregnant (almost always in a mixed aquarium)
  • They do not have a gonopodium

Aquarium conditions:

  • Aquarium size: From 40 liters for a small group (preferably 60+ liters)
  • Temperature: 22–28°C (ideally around 25–26°C)
  • pH: 6.8–8.0
  • GH: 8–20°dGH (prefer harder water)
  • Plants & decoration: Densely planted areas for the fry to hide, but also open space for swimming
  • Water flow: Gentle to moderate
