Ancistrus dolichopterus come from the Rio Negro, a river with "black" waters, very fine sand, and many pieces of wood fallen on the riverbed.

The name Ancistrus comes from the Greek word Ánkistron, meaning hook, and refers to the interopercular odontodes, the side fins that look like hooks. The specific epithet (dolichopterus) refers to the long fins of the species.
