We all more or less know Popeye, or at least have heard of him. His name has become famous through movies, video games, cartoons, and of course comics. Internationally, Elzie Crisler Segar's creation has managed to connect with an entire range of generations, from 1929 to the present day. In 2002, TV Guide ranked Popeye number 20 on the list of the "50 Greatest Cartoon Characters of All Time."
Bud Sagendorf (1915-1994) is the creator with the longest career in the Popeye comic strip. He created many dozens of stories of the beloved sailor, both in comic book form and as daily and Sunday newspaper strips. He enriched the universe of our favorite sailor with many new characters while deepening the existing ones. In Greece, he became very popular through the magazines of the Dragounis publishing house, which were available at kiosks from 1973 until the mid-1990s. However, for practical reasons, his stories underwent changes since they were created to be printed in American newspapers, not in kiosk comic magazines.
In the Classic Popeye Stories series, we present these stories in their authentic, original form. This is a series of our own production, aiming to read the adventures of the famous sailor without any cuts, exactly as they were published in America. Most of the stories have been recently redistributed by King Features Syndicate and are available edited and in color. Those stories that had remained black and white until today have been colored by our editions according to the standards of the American editions, and are presented in the correct chronological order to ensure absolute chronological continuity.
More specifically, the following nine comic stories are included:
- The Strimmen Strike Back!
- The Little Monster!
- Lights! Camera! Action!
- Blowzo Up in Smoke!
- Bad Trouble!
- Magic Versus Science!
- Today There’s a Wedding!
- Sea Monsters!
- The Last of the Witches!
Additionally, you will find a series of tributes, including:
- POPA.I.
- The Troupe: Revythoulis’ Mom
- The Troupe: Otis O. Otis
- The Troupe: Professor Wotasnozzle
The sixth volume includes nine adventures from the period 1980-1982. Most of the stories in this volume deal with the theme of technological development, which takes on the duties of a king (Blowzo Up in Smoke), creates destructive machines and doubles of our heroes (Bad Trouble and The Little Monster), manipulates our heroes with the aim of conquering the world (Sea Monsters), or challenges the era of magic (Magic Versus Science and The Last of the Witches). All these stories deal with a theme that in 2025 is more relevant than ever — with Sagendorf’s artistic concerns present in all the stories.
Also, in this volume, we get to know better the supporting cast of the troupe, such as the Strimmen, Professor Wotasnozzle, and the multi-talented Otis O.
Otis, as well as Revythoulis' mom (yes, this is not an urban legend), while in the story "Today a Wedding is Happening" it is explained why Popeye is eternally engaged to Olive, instead of getting married.
Don't miss another volume that will immerse you in the entertaining world of our beloved sailor of comics, Popeye!
