"Backgrounds and Sources" includes the publication history of "War and Peace," excerpts from Tolstoy's letters and diaries, as well as three drafts of his introduction to the novel that shed light on its development, along with an 1868 article in which Tolstoy responds to his critics.
"Criticism" features twenty essays, seven of which are new, offering a variety of perspectives on the novel from Nikolai Strakhov, V. I. Lenin, Henry James, Isaiah Berlin, D. S. Mirsky, Katharine Fayer, Lydia Ginzburg, Richard Gustafson, Gaius Saul Morson, and Caryle Emerson, among others. The edition also includes a Chronology and a Select Bibliography.
